The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, the first tertiary institution in Kwara State has elected new Student Union executives to pilot the affairs of students during the 2009/2010 session. The new executives were inaugurated after a peaceful, free and fair election. To pilot the affairs of the executives is Senator Suleiman AbdulGaniy Olayiwola , Elect. Elect. Department, Institute of Technology (IOT), as the newly elected SUG president. The swearing –in ceremony was witnessed by Governing Council members such as Hon. A. A. Muhammed and Barrister Johnson Odedele , the Rector, Alhaji Mas’ud Elelu, Deputy Rector Academics, Dr. (Mrs.) Martha Olasehinde, Deputy Rector Administration ,Alhaji Olayinka Ibrahim, Registrar, Mr. Moses Salami, Director of Students’ Services Mrs. Olayinka Oyewole, the Chief Security Officer, Major Awe (rtd) and other staff of the Polytechnic. Speaking at the ceremony, the Rector expressed his joy over the successful conduct of the election. Elelu said what transpired during the election showed that the students have demonstrated a high level of maturity, which is expected of students as leaders of tomorrow. He said if Nigeria politicians can learn and imbibe the sense of maturity exhibited by the Kwara State Polytechnic Students during the election, the political environment in Nigeria would be more interesting and attractive to professionals in various fields who have developed apathy towards the Nigerian politics; due to violence and other crimes associated with politics in Nigeria. He explained that the out-going executives have been able to demonstrate that gone were the days when students union government and school management relationships are always marred with rancours and misunderstandings. The Rector therefore enjoined the new executives to see their election as a challenge and toe the line of peaceful coexistence with the management, just like their predecessors, so that Kwara State Polytechnic will be able to concentrate on pursuing its lovely goals. Elelu advised the entire students to be law-abiding , face their studies squarely, shun any act of violence and ensure that peace and unity remained the order of the day in the Polytechnic. He also thanked the Kwara State Government for the enormous support given to the school since he assumed office in the school. The Kwara State Polytechnic boss promised to work peacefully and harmoniously with the new executives just like he did with their predecessors; adding that the out going executives should be ready to take up leadership positions in all their future endeavours. In his speech, the Chairman of the Kwara State Polytechnic Governing Council, Engr. Musa Yeketi, who was represented by Barrister Johnson Odedele expressed his gratitude to the students for a successful election. Yeketi said Nigeria as a whole should see the peaceful conduct of the election in Kwara Poly as in eye-opener by people saddled with conduct of elections and Nigerian Politicians. He advised the students to continue to be law abiding and always remember the sons and daughters of whom they are anywhere they are; promising to work harmoniously with the new executives. The Director of Students Services, Mrs. Olayinka Oyewole, who could not hide her joy over the manner in which the election was held was full of praises for the students during the election. While thanking both the management, staff and students for their support during the tenure of the past SUG, she advised the in –coming SUG to conduct themselves in a way that will continue to attract the support of all stake holders in the school. Mrs. Oyewole promised to work tirelessly with the new executives. Earlier in a related development, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone C recently honoured three Principal Officers of the Kwara State Polytechnic with awards of excellence. They are the Deputy Rector, Administration, Alhaji Olayinka Ibrahim, Registrar, Mr. Moses Salami and Director of Students’ Services, Mrs. Olayinka Oyewole.
